Day 5...Whale Watching

This is the catamaran that picked us up from the Aloha Tower. It was a lunch cruise so we were served a chicken and fish buffet lunch. There was a Professor on board who was narrating the sightings. We saw flying fish, whales and dolphins.

This is the fin of a hump back whale.

Size: 48 to 62.5 ft

Weight: 40 tons

Group name: Pod

Protection status: Endangered

The whales are having trouble going back and forth between Alaska and Hawaii because there is a garbage dump floating in the ocean the size of Texas in their path and they get caught in it. I'm not sure why this is allowed but I'm sure corruption is involved. Do your part and recycle!

The back of a hump back whale. Hump back whales breed in Hawaiian waters and then head toward Alaska in winter to feed. When mothers are in Hawaiian waters they lose 1/3 of their body weight, 30,000 pounds, because they don't eat while in Hawaiian waters.

Check out this hair! I got a bit pink today...I swear I could feel my skin sizzling. Yes, I had sun screen on!

A pair of dolphins escorted us back to the dock.

Forgot to tell you about the "blow." See it on the lower left of the picture? As the whale exhales it's old air, part of normal breathing, it causes a spray of water to shoot up into the air 15 to 20 feet.

The little blow/breath coming from the whale looks like a heart.

It does! We didn't notice that.

Very cool pics colleen...not ashamed to admit I'm a little jealous! I would have been very tempted to jump in with the dolphins :)
