Day 6...Submarine Ride

We had a great time riding in a submarine...we had large viewing windows for all the passengers.  Notice behind me the white bag...there were a lot of people needing those, including Aunt Patti!

We departed from the Hawaii Hilton Hotel...there are lots of shops, two swimming pools and even some penguins for entertainment!

There are coral reefs on many parts of the island but on the side we toured there was mainly lava flows so marine biologists created man made reefs for fish habitat.  This particular reef was brought from Japan, there are several others like it and different types.  As you can see the fish love their playgrounds!

Notice the LED display in the background?  That is the depth below the surface water that we are at...the deepest we went was 117 feet....you would never know it by the amount of light in the water at these depths! At these depths the red UV rays are filtered so items that have red in them actually appear to be a different color!

This is a sunken ship that we saw...this particular ship was used by the Navy for refueling.  After it was put out of service and cleaned up it was sunk for an artificial reef.  Sea turtles will sit on the decks of sunken ships and eat all day to conserve energy and oxygen.  Every 3 hours or so the turtles make their way back to the surface for oxygen and then back to their resting place for food and rest!

Back at the surface aboard our shuttle we were able to watch the next group of people submerge into the watery depths!  This submarine is 105 feet long and holds 64 passengers plus 3 crew members.
