2024.03.09 Salt River Wild Horses

According to the volunteer guide, there are 311 wild horses at this time. All horses are names. The horse with the dark mane is named Garett. The state requires the use of birth control with a limit of 2 foals per year. Last year there were none since mountain lions for the babies.

They do not use veterinarians. If they would need to use one, the horse can't go back into the wild. Stallions try to mate all year but most offspring are born in the spring. They track the family trees of the horses. They are monitored that closely!

How long have Salt River wild horses been around?

horses have been documented along the Salt river since the late 18th Century, well before the area became a National Forest in 1905. But the 1971 Act left The Salt river horses (The Tonto National Forest) unprotected. The Act considered this population "feral," not "wild," and therefore not under B.L.M.

Very cool to see!!!

Where can I see wild horses in Salt River?

You can spot the wild horses throughout the 18-mile stretch of the Lower Salt River that encompasses the six recreation areas, but the horses are most commonly seen at spots close to Saguaro Lake, including Phon D. Sutton Recreation Area, Granite Reef Recreation Area and Coon Bluff Recreation Area.
