24.03.15 Picketpost Trailhead, Superior AZ

Picketpost Trail/Arizona Trail

Picketost Trail branches off from part of the Arizona Trail and loops around Picketpost Mountain.  Here is a little history of the Arizona Trail that extends from the Mexico border to the Utah border.

Picketpost Mountain.

We found a pile of bones and joked about an Arizona saying "but it's a dry heat". LOL

This barrel cactus is just beginning to bloom.

This hike was fairly flat compared to most, we went about 6 miles today.

Picketpost Mountain in the background.  As you can see the sky is getting darker.

Rose crossing the stream just as the rain started.

Much of this trail shadowed and crossed this stream.

We found an overhanging rock to take a break from the rain.

You can see the streaks from water carrying iron from the soil running down the cliffs.

It didn't take long for the rain to come down steady.

We found another sheltered area to have lunch.

Time to take a nap and let our gear dry out a little.  LOL

This was an interesting natural arch for a group photo!  Left to right, Rose McLeod, me, Jo Wiedmaier Linn and Linda.

Of course I had to get a photo of Tom Wilkinson starting the last group hike that he is leading this season before going home to Canada.  I learned a lot about hiking in the desert, landmarks and their names and other tips for striking out on our own hikes after he leaves.  Memories made!

Do you think they were horse bones? It's nice that the desert is greening up and the flowers are blooming!

It is fun Cashton! I'm going out to another waterfall with some friends on Tuesday and post more pictures.

I think that rancher's let their cattle graze on the BLM land Vicki and suspect it was a small cow. Yes, it's been getting greener the last few weeks with the Spring rains and we're getting anxious for the cactus blooms. One couple we met at our table for Burleen's dinner show said late April or in May for the Cactus, I hope we don't miss it because we will get to higher elevations once we leave here and the bloom is later.
