24.05.17 Wupatki National Monument

We almost didn't go to this National Monument because it was getting late and it was 21 miles from Sunset Crater. We were following the loop road around Sunset Crater and Al said he had looked at the map and the road should come out on HWY 89. We drove and we drove and we drove...

There was nothing anywhere except several pueblo sites. Seriously, this road had no houses, no towns, nothing. Out in the middle of nowhere were these National Monument signs. We visited all that we saw and then drove some more.....FINALLY!!! We found the HWY and good thing because we needed diesel! We thought we'd grab a bite to eat at this gas station/bar/diner. I went inside, looked around, smelled, bought two wrapped ice cream bars and left. NOT eating there!

Wukoki Pueblo

This opening served as a window, there was a good breeze coming through that made it feel pretty cool in there.

This was the actual doorway to get into this room, I had to almost crawl to get through the opening!

Some of the walls are actually quite tall, that had to have taken a lot of time for the native people to build these structures!

It's interesting that they even thought about pillars for support under the rock slab.

Lava that looked like a turtle.

Wupatki Pueblo

The locations of these primitive homes were pretty well thought out.  You could easily see any game in the distance to hunt or any enemies that might be a threat to your people.

Nalakihu & Citadel Pueblos

Lomaki Pueblo

As we traveled home, we caught this beautiful sunset!

There is just something about the red rock against the blue sky. GORGEOUS! Loved the picture that you were looking out the "window" at the landscape, very artistic :)
And that turtle rock 🐢 :) cute!
